Many Animals, One Zoo: Help Each Other Be Safe!
27 Aug, 2012![]()
Contrary to the opinion of the great pop philosopher Prince, we believe Life is Just a Party, and Parties Were Meant 2 Last. There will be more party animals at the Zoo this weekend than ever before, and we want your party to last through the entire weekend safely and soundly, so please, watch out for each other, and know that help is all around you. If you see someone slip, trip, or overheat, someone who needs medical attention, rehydration, or just a helping hand, please keep the positive vibe alive, and be a friend to a friend in need.
What does that mean? Well, be a good friend - if you see someone who looks like they could use a helping hand, or you or your fellow party animal is not feeling well for ANY reason, bring it to the attention of one of our helpful staff working at a HELP POINT. These are trained security and medical personnel who are here to help keep everyone safe, whether it's getting someone out of a tight spot when they're a little unsteady on their feet, getting water to someone who's dehydrated, or taking someone who's not being civil for a "time out". They'll be all around the festival grounds in spots that allow them to keep an eye on things, and their locations will be marked with this H icon:
. There will also be medical aid stations marked with a red cross in the four corners of the park.
When you arrive at the festival, you'll see people handing out bright pink flyers with a map showing all of the HELP POINTS, including the medical aid stations. You can also find those flyers at vendor booths along with festival guide booklets. Please take a moment when you arrive to read the flyer and familiarize yourself with the HELP POINTS locations - it could make all the difference should you or someone you care about find themselves in need.
And be good to yourself - make sure to drink water throughout the day (there will be free high-speed water refill stations in several locations), keep your body fueled for dancing with the many good eats available, wear sunscreen and find a shady spot to lounge if you need it. Treat your mind and body with respect and help others do the same.
We're all headed to the Zoo to celebrate together, so let's keep the party positive by looking out for each other!

New this year - VIP Tables: Provocateur Zoo
13 Aug, 2012

FLOW.12: Art Along the Randall's Island Shoreline
16 Jul, 2012
Michael Clyde Johnson's Untitled (Two Viewing Rooms, Offset), 2012
The Randall’s Island Park Alliance, The Bronx Museum of the Arts, and Made Event are pleased to present FLOW, a two-part environmental art exhibition on view during the summers of 2011 and 2012 along the shoreline at Randall’s Island Park. The project is aimed at fostering appreciation of the shoreline through artistic expression, while calling visitors to interact with and care for the Park’s island environment. FLOW features ten site specific art projects, five each summer, by participants in the Bronx Museum’s Artists in the Marketplace (AIM) program for emerging artists.
FLOW.12 – this year's exhibition – will be open to the public from June-September, and will feature five new site-specific installations, all reflecting and encouraging interaction with the Park’s history and environment.
FLOW has been made possible through a generous grant from the Rockefeller Foundation’s New York City Cultural Innovation Fund (CIF) and through support from Made Event, proud producers of The Electric Zoo Festival, NYC’s largest electronic dance music festival, held annually at Randall’s Island Park.
The FLOW exhibitions express the confluence of art, music and environment at Randall’s Island Park, in the midst of one of the world’s greatest cities. For more information about this year's exhibition, visit www.flow12.org.

Single Day passes are going fast. The price of Saturday and Sunday Single Day General Admission passes will go up this Thursday night at midnight, so grab yours now!
Late-Breaking Main Stage Addition: Netsky
27 Jun, 2012
We couldn't be happier to bring you this late-breaking news... Netsky has been added to the Electric Zoo 2012 lineup on the Main Stage on Friday, August 31. Leading a wave of new skool D+hoB talent from Europe with his blend of uplifting, melancholic melodies and heavy dancefloor bass + beats, the young Belgian producer and DJ is sure to bring the perfect mix of emotion and intensity to move the thousands gathered at the main stage under the New York City sky.
After huge remixes of Pendulum, Plan B, Leftfield, and Swedish House Mafia, Netsky's new album "2" is finally here, available on CD, vinyl and digital download from Hospital Records. The release takes Netsky's signature sound and brings in live influences with elements of electro-hour and dubstep alongside the euphoric, hands-in-the-air D+B he has become known for.
Check out the video for the first single, "Come Alive", directed by High Contrast, and then get ready for Netsky's Electric Zoo debut on Friday, August 31!

They'll all be gone by the end of June, so if you want one, now's the time to grab it! 22 May, 2012
There's not much time left to get in on the 30% Plan. The deadline to take advantage of this convenient way of splitting your bill into 3 payments is May 31 at midnight. In Memoriam: DJ Mehdi
14 Sep, 2011We are shocked and saddened by the loss of DJ Mehdi. Our deepest condolences go out to his family and friends at this difficult time. DJ Mehdi was one of a very few DJs who played every year at Electric Zoo since it began; we were lucky to have been able to enjoy and share his wonderful talent and vivacious spirit.

Plastikman Live 1.5 Show Cancelled; Richie Hawtin playing DJ set with special LED visuals instead
02 Sep, 2011
Due to unforeseen circumstances caused by Hurricane Irene last week, the Plastikman 1.5 live show will not be able to proceed tonight as originally planned.
Electric Zoo will now be presenting a special one hour Richie Hawtin DJ set with the Ali Demiral LED visuals show. This will take place at 10pm-11pm in the Hilltop Arena – the same arena where Plastikman would have performed.
From Richie Hawtin, "Plastikman Live is a technically challenging show that has appeared successfully in over a dozen countries over the past year. My production team has been on site in NYC since Tuesday working alongside the Electric Zoo production team preparing for this show, and they have done everything within their powers to address the challenges that have been presented at the event. Sadly it has not worked out and we regret to announce that Plastikman will not perform in New York this weekend. We are excited, in light of the situation, that we are able to present this LED visual show similar to the shows that we present at other festivals around the world".
Richie Hawtin will also still headline the Sunday School Grove on Sunday at Electric Zoo.

Double the pleasure, double the fun, double the Dirty South at Electric Zoo! Dirty South is officially confirmed to play an additional set in the Red Bull Riverside on Friday, September 2, from 7:40pm - 9pm. He replaces Martin Solveig, who announced an unfortunate back injury yesterday and is postponing his U.S. dates. Dirty South is also still playing in the Hilltop Arena on Saturday, September 3, from 6:30pm - 8pm as well as the official Electric Zoo after party on Saturday night at Pacha NYC.

Electric Zoo is returning to Randall's Island for its 3rd year. It's been a great success so far with attendance increasing steadily every year. What are some of the most significant changes this year?
The first thing people will notice this year is that the production has increased exponentially. Everything from the enlarged site, to the much bigger tents and main stage, light shows and sets are a giant leap forward from last year. With Integral Sound (which has always been our calling card), we are doing things that have never been attempted before in a festival setting. Prepare to be blown away! VIP has been significantly upgraded as well and there is a new second VIP area located in the grove with more of a chill out vibe. As always the food and drink choices are very important to us and we have really stepped it up this year.
What was the impetus for expanding the festival from 2 days to 3 days?
Our vision was always to grow into a 3 day festival. That is why we chose Labor Day weekend, so fans would have an extra day for rest and travel.
There is always a new influx of emerging dance music talent each year. How do you stay current when putting together the festival programming?
We do our best to listen to what the fans are asking for. We are electronic music fans ourselves so we are just as excited to hear new artists and the hottest tracks of the year.
How do you choose the headliners? Is there anything you specifically look for?
We look for the biggest talents over the year and artists that truly resonate with their fans. We also have many long-term relationships with our artists and with somebody like Armin van Buuren, we have worked with him for nearly 10 years.
What are some of the must-see performances this year?
There will be so many great performances this year that we will be very busy running from stage to stage ourselves, but here are some great ones that may not be on everyone's radar...

Flow.11, a waterfront public art exhibit on Randall's Island opening in July in conjunction with Randall's Island Sports Foundation (RISF) and The Bronx Museum of the Arts. Tell us about Made Event's involvement and what we can expect on the island?
We have been working with Aimee Boden, the Executive Director of the Randall's Island Sports Foundation (RISF) to develop FLOW, and we're really excited about it! Aimee conceptualized the program with assistance from the Bronx Museum of Art. FLOW is an outdoor public art installation with five large-scale works exhibited on the park's shoreline.
In 2010 Made Event donated $1.00 for each single day Electric Zoo ticket and $2.00 for each two-day. This year we will donate $1.50 for each single day ticket, and $4.50 for each three day pass. What this means is that each and every festival goer contributes to this amazing program - bringing art to the beautiful public space that is Randall's Island.
We encourage everyone to check out the FLOW works on exhibit now at the park!
Besides the abundance of music, what other activities can festival goers look forward to on-site?
Derrick Little and his team are back again this year with their Face and Body Painting. It was a huge hit last year so definitely plan on getting painted! There's also the T-shirt remix station, back by popular demand. The Garden of EZ with Braindrop is a must see too!
Last year the Sunday School tent was re-imagined as a green forest. Are any of the stages this year under going similar transformations?
This year there won't be a green forest in any of the tents but we love the play of the green trees in the park setting and we think you are going to love the transformation that happens in the 'Garden Of EZ'. As for the tents, the set designs will be far beyond anything we have done before.
Obviously producing a festival of this size is a huge endeavor. Why did you originally want to produce an electronic music festival? What do you enjoy most about producing a music festival?
Our job is to blow people's minds... What could be better than that? And we get to spend all year dreaming up how to do it better than the last year. What we enjoy most about producing a festival is seeing a sea of thousands of smiling faces having the time of their lives. We've had many amazing moments on the dance floor ourselves so it feels great to give it back.
How do you stay calm and prepare yourself to produce an event of this size?
Calm? Who's calm? ;-). We both do yoga, I cycle like a madman and Laura gardens and makes jams and pickles...
What are your plans for after Electric Zoo?
Some serious downtime with friends and family, and hopefully a vacation. And planning for EZ 2012 of course... See you at the Zoo!

Lions and tigers and bears! And monsters and vampires and fairies! Oh my! Electric Zoo goers in 2010 might recall running into a more than a few fantastical faces roaming Randall’s Island Park. They were the handiwork of artist Derrick Little, who returns this year to bring his talented team of face painters to transform you into your favorite party animal -- or whatever else you can imagine.
Derrick Little is an award-winning face and body painter and a visual artist based in New York City, who pushes the limits of face and body art. His creative, colorful and theatrical face and body art stems from his early participation in the iconic New York nightclubs of the 1990s.
Since launching his makeup artistry career in 2001, Derrick has achieved national and international acclaim for his unique artistry and style, which is influenced by magic, mysticism, and his reverence for all of life. Katherine Daniels' Tenkenas Sash (2011)
Randall’s Island Sports Foundation (RISF), The Bronx Museum of the Arts, and Made Event announce FLOW, a two-part public art exhibition that will be on view during the summers of 2011 and 2012 along the shoreline at Randall’s Island Park. This unique project is aimed at fostering an appreciation of the waterfront environment through large-scale outdoor sculptures and art installations. The first installation, titled FLOW.11, will be unveiled on July 1, 2011, with additional special celebrations planned for Labor Day Weekend, in tandem with Electric Zoo, a three-day electronic music festival at Randall’s Island featuring the planet's biggest international DJs and live acts across four stages. A portion of the sale of every Electric Zoo ticket from 2010 & 2011 is donated to the project, which is aimed at fostering an appreciation of the waterfront environment through large-scale outdoor sculptures and art installations.
Flow.11 will feature five site-specific projects by emerging artists. The artists were selected from this year’s Bronx Calling, the first Artist in the Marketplace (AIM) biennial at the Bronx Museum and Wave Hill. Visitors to the park can view the art installations free of charge on foot and by bike along the island’s newly restored 4.5-mile waterfront pathways.
“We are thrilled to host FLOW on Randall’s Island Park. This exciting project will draw many new and existing visitors to the island this summer and next. Randall’s Island’s beautiful waterfront pathways are the perfect location for these inspiring works of public art, set against the Manhattan skyline. FLOW is the first of many visual arts events which will take advantage of Randall’s Island’s unique setting in the coming years, and the installation reinforces RISF’s mission to transform the park into a varied and comprehensive recreational resource for New Yorkers,” said Aimee Boden, Executive Director of the Randall’s Island Sports Foundation.
The artists creating works for FLOW.11 at Randall’s Island are Andrew Chan, Katherine Daniels, Jongil Ma, Gregory Reynolds, and Romy Scheroder. Their works range from a 12-foot sci-fi-themed Resident Alien, inspired by the island’s large water tower, to a chain-link fence woven with colorful plastic ribbons representing the island’s Native American past, to Hey Poseidon, a shipwrecked wooden boat reminiscent of the many boats in the Park’s history that have foundered in the surprisingly strong currents of the Hell Gate rapids in the East River. Each site has been selected to best showcase the artwork and the island -- from the ball fields to the bike and pedestrian pathways and the riverside lawns – and to reach out to Randall’s Island’s diverse community of ball players, bikers, runners, walkers, picnickers, island explorers, and events goers.
Randall’s Island Park is a remarkable 480-acre waterfront resource located in the East River, with unparalleled views of Queens, the Bronx and Manhattan. New waterfront pathways run along the island’s shoreline, which includes almost 9 acres of restored salt marsh and freshwater wetlands. The Park also offers a world-class track & field stadium, a golf center, a state-of-the-art 20-court tennis center and over 60 new sports fields, as well as the Harlem River Event site, which is home to concerts, theater, and events. In addition, the Randall’s Island Sports Foundation runs year-round youth sports and arts programs that are offered free of charge to thousands of children annually, and are run in close partnership with over 120 local public schools and community-based organizations in Harlem and the South Bronx. As a result, the park is fast becoming the ultimate playground for all New Yorkers.
“We are very proud to bring outdoor art and sculpture to Randall’s Island through the FLOW exhibitions, and hope that the confluence of art and environment will find continued expression at the Park,” said Holly Block, Executive Director, The Bronx Museum of the Arts.
FLOW has been made possible through a generous grant from the Rockefeller Foundation’s New York City Cultural Innovation Fund (CIF), alongside support from Made Event.

Dirty South Returns to Electric Zoo
08 Jun, 2011
“Man, it was amazing. It was like my favorite New York gig ever!” said Dirty South, fresh off his performance at Electric Zoo Festival last year.
Now with a new mix compilation, more hit remixes, and second Grammy nomination under his belt, Dirty South returns to Electric Zoo 2011 to put thousands of electronic dance music lovers back under his spell.
It’s been an amazing ride for Dirty South, a.k.a. Dragan Roganovic. Born in Belgrade, Serbia and relocating to Melbourne, Australia when he was 13, Dragan’s musical journey was influenced by everything around him. Like many other youngsters starting out in the music biz, Dragan couldn’t afford turntables but he managed to improvise with his old NEC Hi-Fi and started mixing with the tape decks. After taking the next step with a brand new computer, software and keyboards, he released his first official production in 2004 and Dirty South was born.
An invasion of Dirty South releases and remixes followed, which instantly earned nominations, awards and accolades: “Essential New Tune” labels by the legendary Pete Tong, Grammy Award nominations in Best Remix for Kaskade’s “Sorry” and The Temper Trap’s “Sweet Disposition” (with Axwell) and more. Dirty South has joined forces with some of best producers in the world and created anthems such as “Open Your Heart” with Axwell and “How Soon Is Now” with David Guetta and Sebastian Ingrosso. And it’s no surprise that he’s remixed some of the most recognizable names in the music industry including U2, Snoop Dogg, Depeche Mode and Josh Wink.
In between his heavy touring schedule of the world’s top clubs and festivals, Dirty South has always found time to do a yearly mix CD, putting his name down to compilations for labels such as Ministry Of Sound, Toolroom Records, Cr2 and SONY. As Electric Zoo fans know, last summer Dirty South released “Phazing,” one of 2010’s biggest dance anthems, which has since gone on to become a global clubbing concept reaching galactic heights.
Dirty South recently released a colossal remix of Diddy Dirty Money feat. Skylar Grey’s Billboard smash single “Coming Home,” a track full of dirty growling synths, a sultry, sexy vocal, huge breakdowns and – of course – a few interjections from Diddy himself. And on June 21, this unstoppable artist releases ‘Strictly Dirty South,’ 2-CD compilation featuring classics from the legendary house label Strictly Rhythm and Dirty South originals, remixes and extra special edits.
Said Dirty South, “The first disc is a reflection of my 'old school' house music and it features some of the tracks I grew up with, while the second disc is basically the sound that I currently play at my shows and these are the biggest tracks of today.”
So pick up a copy and get ready to experience it live when Dirty South hits the stage at Electric Zoo on Saturday, September 3, 2011!
Let's clear the air: Dust reduction efforts for 2011
02 Jun, 2011
When Electric Zoo opened up last year, on Saturday September 4 at 11am, the Randall's Island Park lawn was lush, long, and seemingly healthy. But the dancing and frolicking of 25,000 pairs of feet coupled with the unusually dry summer took a toll, and by the end of the day, the grass had been trampled and a lot of dirt had been kicked up into the air. When the wind gusted - especially around the Sunday School Grove, but in other parts of the festival grounds too - the dust was downright obnoxious. Many of you, understandably, have expressed concerns about this. We hear you, and we've been working on measures to address this problem in 2011. We're serious about doing everything we can to minimize the dust, so we can ALL breathe easy and focus on what we love - the music!
Here's a list of things we've put in place to reduce the dust:
Flooring will be used in all of the tents
This means that where all that dancing is going on, the grass will be protected and dirt won't be kicked up.
Dirt service roads will be covered with flooring
As our crew travels in golf carts and other vehicles to get from place to place around the perimeter of the festival grounds, there'll be far less dirt stirred up.
Making use of existing pavement for high traffic areas, including the area directly in front of the main stage
The main stage will be moved back this year in order to create more space. This will mean that a large area directly in front of the main stage will now be situated on pavement rather than grass. So when you "tear up the dancefloor" in front of the main stage, you'll no longer be tearing up grass and kicking up dirt at the same time :)
We've also hired lawn specialists to consult with and work with our friends at Randall's Island Park to improve on the maintenance of the field and to get it as healthy as possible before Electric Zoo. At their recommendation, we have also taken these measures:
- Installed additional irrigation in early Spring
- Lawn aeration
- Reseeding, fertilizing and adding gypsum

You know you want to go to Electric Zoo but you don't have all the money for a pass available right now. If only you could pay a little now and a little later, right? Well we've got good news for you!

What's the best way to get to Electric Zoo? We think it's the ferry. It's convenient, scenic, eco-friendly, and affordable. Ferries will travel to and from Randall's Island Park for all three days of the festival throughout the day. Departures will take place from East 35th Street Ferry Landing located at the intersection of East 35th Street at FDR Drive, with ferries running approximately every 15 minutes.
Just sit back and enjoy a quick trip up the East River, and as a bonus you'll get a great view of the Manhattan skyline along the way. The ferry is also an eco-friendly choice - the boats are designed with low-wake hulls to minimize impact on aquatic life and employ state-of-the-art low-emission technology.
Why endure the stress of driving in New York City traffic or pay for a taxi cab when you can enjoy the convenience of a relaxing ride across the river on the ferry? When you buy a 3 Day Pass with Ferry, you get a round trip on the ferry for each day of the festival for a price that works out to just $7.50 per ride. But there may not be ferry tickets available to purchase separately later, so make sure you get them with your festival pass!
